"Thanks, Josie."
"Any time, dear."
The angel hadn't made herself visible, so D.J. couldn't be certain Josie had left. Before she could ask, McCall came up behind her.
"Who are you talking to?"
Hell's bells. I forgot all about him.
D.J. stepped back inside, taking her time as she closed the door. What was wrong with her mind? In the past she'd always been able to compartmentalize her thoughts, staying aware of hidden dangers while she dealt with other problems head on. How could she have forgotten about McCall while she dealt with the maid and with Josie?
Spinning away from the door, D.J. nearly ran into him. He stood too close to her in the cramped hallway. "Iahno one. Just me, myself, and I." She gave a little laugh and shoved the extra towels into McCall's hands. Then she pushed past him, intent on reaching the open room and putting some space between them so she could think with a clear head. Everything was happening too fast, and for the first time in her life she couldn't seem to think on her feet.
Taking a deep breath, she took stock of her reactions. Her heartbeat had returned to normal. She would examine her unprecedented panic attack later if she could find some time alone. Right now she needed to pacify her roommate.
After placing the towels in the bathroom McCall followed her into the bedroom, a puzzled frown on his face. Before he could ask another question, D.J. spoke. "The maid brought extra towels."
